Bhubaneswar , 20/1 ( Odisha Samachar/Abhisek Mohanty): “All the elite sections of the society must join hands together to fight against the social evils and to eradicate it. We are speaking about eradication of untouchability, but in real practice the scenario is something different even until recently”, said Minister of SC & ST Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department Sri Lal Bihari Himirika. He was addressing the two-day state level workshop on “Strategies for Effective Awareness Campaign against Social Evils” organised by State Level Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe Research and Training Institute (SCSTRTI) at Hotel Kalinga Ashok on Monday here.
Delivering his address Former Information Commissioner Prof. Radhamohan emphasized that concentrated efforts at field level are necessary to fight against the social evils. There should be awareness among the people who will take leadership in the fight and the government is also taking efforts in this regard.
Sharing the workshop’s objectives Dr. Akhila Bihari Ota spoke about the definition and types of Social Evil particularly in tribal society, their status and problems.
Consultant, SCSTRTI Mr. T.S. Chakraborthy said “If awareness is generated among the leading people in society, they will disseminate the message to others and generally a level of awareness in the entire society can be raised”. The workshop has been designed to create awareness for campaigning against the social evils, especially the target groups are SC and ST, he added.
During the course of programme, the provisions and mechanisms of PCR & POA Act & Rules were discussed and the important role of different Departments, NGOs and media towards eradicating these issues were also highlighted by the speakers.
The workshop is an attempt to understand philosophical and liberating ideas towards building an egalitarian and democratic society that overrides man-made differences & ensures inclusion in the restricted areas enshrining equality of opportunity as well as actual opportunities among the members of the society which is essential for building a healthy State based on real democratic principles.
