Bhubaneswar, 14/6 ( Odisha Samachar Bureau ) – Marking the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize Winner, who discovered the ABO blood group system the day has been celebrated through out the globe in every year. On this occassion it is an opportunity to express gratitude to those who donate their blood in order to save lives, without expecting anything in return. It is also a day to create awareness on the need for safe blood & blood products and to thank the voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life saving gifts of blood.
This year’s Theme is: “Give the gift of life: donate blood”. This theme reinforces the urgent need of more and more people all over the world to become life-savers and public health role models by volunteering to donate blood regularly. Blood is not only needed to save lives in times of emergencies but also to sustain the lives of patients who require regular blood transfusion such as the leukemia patients, the hemophiliacs, the thalassaemia patients & also patients undergoing major surgery and the victims of road accidents etc.
World Blood Donor Day celebrated by Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch(IRCS,OSB), Bhubaneswar in collaboration with State Blood Transfusion Council(SBTC), OSACS, NRHM, District Red Cross Branch, Khordha & Regional Red Cross Branch on 14.6.2013 at Jayadev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar.
Dr. S.C. Jamir, His Excellency, the Governor of Odisha and the President, Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch inaugurated the function as Chief Guest and expressed that Blood can’t be made artificially. In his address he highlighted that due to increase of population the requirement of blood is also increasing, so voluntary blood collection should be increased proportionately. He told that IRCS-OSB and other voluntary organizations are doing commendable job in mobilizing blood in the state. Community participation is vital for mobilization of blood.
Dr. Rajalaxmi Mohanty, Director, SBTC joined as the Guest of Honour in the function and focused on various initiatives taken by the Govt. in the state on blood sector.
Dr. Mangala Prasad Mohanty, Honorary Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch gave the welcome address & highlighted the role of IRCS-OSB in the field of voluntary blood donation as well as introduction of e-governance system in the state.
On this occassion 41 regular voluntary unpaid blood donors from each Red Cross Blood Bank of the State, who has donated highest units of blood in the year 2012 were felicitated by His Excellency Governor of Odisha in the State Level function.
To create wider awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation and to encourage more and more people to come forward to donate blood regularly, a Human Chain was formed from AG square to PMG square in the morning and a Signature Campaign also be organized at Jayadev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar. A Voluntary Blood Donation Camp organized at Red Cross Blood Bank, Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar where 22 units of blood collected.
Sri Nagendra Nath Das, Honorary Joint Secretary offered vote of thanks and Dr. Sarita Supkar, Youth Red Cross Officer conducted the state level function.
