Bhubaneswar , 4/4 ( Odisha Samachar / Abhisek Mohanty )- The Government has set a target of 2.6 lakh hectare of additional irrigation for the year 2016-17. The Water Resources Department should do well in setting target for individual sub-sectors of Department of Water Resources and Chief Engineers of concerned sub-sector need to drill down the target right up to the Junior Engineers and Assistant Engineers for ensuring appropriate accountability at all level. This was stated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while addressing the engineers of Water Resources Department through video conference.
The Chief Minister said, “The Department should ensure that all incomplete projects continue their construction activities in full swing by resolving all their problems. Completion of incomplete Minor Irrigation Projects is very important and the balance of about 160 such incomplete projects needs to be completed in this financial year without fail. Mega Lift Irrigation is an important strategy in our scheme of creating additional irrigation. There should be close monitoring and follow up to ensure that at least 40 mega Lift Irrigation points are commissioned in 2016-17.”
“We have taken decision to restructure and strengthen the Drainage Organisation. The restructured Drainage Organisation must undertake large number of creek irrigation projects in non-irrigated pockets of the coastal areas,” he said, adding that water efficiency is something which every engineer in the field must attempt to ensure in close collaboration with Agriculture Field Establishment.
Lastly, the Chief Minister urged all the officers of the Department to ensure that the works are done with absolute integrity and transparency. Quality of the assets created must not be compromised in any manner. Any lapse in this shall be severely dealt with, he further added.
Among others, ACS to Chief Minister Upendranath Behera, Water Resources Principal Secretary PK Jena and other senior officers were present.
